
BITNET Users Are Urged to Use Internet Addresses for E-Mail
For many years BITNET has provided valuable networking services to research and higher education and, as a result, it contributed to the more recent widespread use of the Internet. Now that participation in BITNET has dropped around the world, CREN (the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking) has announced that it will phase out support for BITNET. CREN encourages users to convert to the Internet by the end of this year.
If you are currently using a BITNET address for E-mail communication, DCRT's Computing Facilities Branch recommends that you begin using your Internet address now. Also when you receive E-mail from BITNET users, remember to supply the sender with your Internet address.
If you are a WYLBUR user, replace NIHCU in your E-mail address with CU.NIH.GOV. In the following example "iii" is your DCRT registered initials:

BITNET's long success is an example of inspired collaboration between individuals and organizations. The many people who pioneered BITNET may have understandable regrets, but they have guaranteed BITNET a well-deserved place in the history of networking.
