Planning Is Underway for an MVS Standard System

CIT is in the process of developing an "MVS standard system" for the NIH Computer Center. The intent is for all work currently being processed by the MVS North and South systems eventually to migrate to this "standard system," reducing the overhead implicit in maintaining separate systems. Plans are for this single system to start accepting work sometime in 1999.

The main goals of this project—to provide a more efficient, reliable and economical processing environment; reduce the dependence on homegrown or customized code; and offer robust commercial products and tools—should aid in the portability of applications between the NIH and other MVS data centers.

Information Gathering Activities

CIT is now surveying other data centers to gather information on their organization and operation. In addition we are also talking with owners of large applications at NIH for their input. If you have issues that you would like to discuss, please feel free to call TASC and ask to speak to someone about the MVS standard system project.

We will provide updates in future Interface articles as progress is made and more information becomes available.
