CIT Announces Summer Computer Training

Leslie Barden, CSB

More than 70 subjects are available during the summer computer training term that begins June 22.

We'll be leading off on the first day of classes with a new seminar by Bill Jones and Star Kline on the features of Web Sponsor for account sponsors who have used ENTER SPONSOR or paper forms in the past. All sponsors and alternate sponsors are urged to attend. Bill has been adding new features and enhancements to Web Sponsor and this is a chance to get up to date on the latest developments. In July, Steve Gearinger and JoAnne Higgins will give an orientation seminar for new account sponsors that will include the new features of Web Sponsor.

Security considerations are of increasing importance. The summer program reflects this with three new seminars: Desktop PC Security, Security Attacks and Fixes, and Security for Server Administrators.

Security of systems and data won't mean much if it all goes awry on January 1, 2000. A new seminar, Year 2000 Concerns for Researchers and Clinicians, will discuss how to discover and mitigate Y2K problems in laboratory systems and software and in computers embedded in biomedical equipment.

In addition to nine popular database courses including SQL, DB2 and Oracle that are returning from previous terms, there are two new database-related courses. The NIH Data Warehouse series is adding a new hands-on seminar on advanced features of the Graphical Query Language (GQL) that are not covered in any of the full-day subject area classes. The second new hands-on database class is being given by the NIH Office of Contracts Management for users of the NIH Contractor Performance System.

Computer-based services for the NIH scientific community are becoming easier to use all the time. The new seminar, Web Access to Helix Scientific Computing Applications, will demonstrate access to applications in the areas of Mathematical and Graphical Analysis, Molecular Biology, Structural Analysis, and Program Development and will offer a hands-on session with the web-based interface.

Any researchers who are new to NIH or missed the introductory sessions on the Web of Science and Porpoise that were given in the spring will want to attend the seminar, Porpoise—An Automated Literature Search Service. Porpoise is a web-based utility, which allows for the creation and management of user-defined search profiles, which are automatically searched against the weekly updates of the Science Citation Index database.

As always, there is no tuition charge to students or their organizations. To apply via the web, go to http://livewire.nih.gov. Registration can also be done by simply calling TASC at (301) 594-3278. Telephone registrants are generally told whether they can be accepted immediately during the initial phone call. Web registrants will be notified via email. During the term you can check your application status via the web at http://livewire.nih.gov/training/lookup.asp .
