How to Set Up the NBARS Scheduler As a Windows NT Service
The currently supported backup client software for Windows NT (ADSM version 2) provides an easy means of setting up the scheduler to run in the background as an NT service. An NT service is a process (e.g., network communication or backup services) that does not require any user intervention. That means there is no display Window or button on the Taskbar, and the service occurs automatically in the background. This service will continue to work with the version 3 server software scheduled to be installed this fall (see "NBARS Software Upgrade Coming in Early Fall," in the Features section).
What to Do Prior to Installing the Scheduler Service
The service will run under the NT System account and should not be changed.
Note: If there is a need to access domain resources on network drives, the account that logs on the service should be changed to an authorized domain user (such as administrator). This may be done via the Services Control Panel.
The default is the NT computer name of the specified machine.
Note: The nodename must be registered with the ADSM server prior to installing the service. (The nodename given to the schedule service will override the nodename specified in the ADSM client options file.)
Note: The password will not be stored in clear text, but will be encrypted in the registry.
How to Install the Service
If you already have the ADSM software installed on your machine, installing the scheduler service is easy.
· Machine
name [default is the "local machine"]
· Service name
[default is "ADSM Central Scheduler Service"]
· ADSM 32-Bit Windows client
directory
If you do not have the ADSM software, you can download the latest version on the NBARS webpage at http://silk.nih.gov/silk/nbars.
How to Check That the Service Has Been Installed
How to Check That the Service Operates Properly
You can do this in either of the following ways:
Review the DSMSCHED.LOG.
This file is located in the directory
in which the latest version of ADSM is installed.
(i.e., C:\win32app\ibm\adsm\baclient).
To get there:
Check the Event Viewer - System Log
This option is located in the NT Administrative Tools. To get there:
· Click Startselect in turn Programs, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.
· Make sure the title bar displays the line
"Event ViewerApplication Log."
If that is not displayed, select the
Log from the menu bar, and then
select Application
to view the application log.
· Double click the ADSM event to display
the details of that Backup service event.
