NBARS Changes Coming Soon Costs Dropping October 1
The NIH backup and recovery service (NBARS) charges will be reduced on October 1, 1998 (see articles in June 1998 issue of Interface). The monthly charge for storing a file will be lowered 50% to $.00075, and the transfer charge will be reduced from $25 to $15 for the first gigabyte and from $10 to $7.50 per gigabyte thereafter.
New Server Software Scheduled for November
Installation of new NBARS server software (projected for November 2, 1998) should be transparent to users. The license fees for the new software require us to increase the minimum monthly transfer charge to $3.00.
This new minimum mainly affects inactive nodes (i.e., nodes that do not transfer any data in a given month).
New Client Software Being Evaluated
We are continuing to test and evaluate the ADSM version 3 client to be certain that the release we make available to the NBARS users is robust. When our evaluation is completed, we will make this client available from the NBARS webpage http://silk.nih.gov/silk/nbars.
Version 3 software includes an enhanced graphical user interface and several other new features. Version 2 software will continue to work with the version 3 server.
