OS/390 Upgrade Will Bring New SPF Panels on March 29
The OS/390 operating system for the MVS North system will be put into production on March 29. Besides being year-2000 compliant, the OS/390 system represents a move towards a standardized MVS environment that will offer users greater flexibility in the establishment and utilization of TSO sessions.
However, the layout for the SPF panels and some of the default parameters for PF keys have changed enough to have some impact on the way users presently use these features. The changes users will encounter with the OS/390 system are described below.

Upon completion of the logon screen you are immediately put into the message screen, which contains pertinent RACF information and any messages from the broadcast system. Hitting enter at this time will take you into the following SPF panel, which is noticeably different that what you are used to. To eliminate the copyright panel in the lower left corner for this session you need to hit enter to get the full panel, or you may enter the desired option in the option field and proceed into the selected panel. You should also note that the option line is at the bottom of the panel instead of the top.

PF Key Values
The OS 390 version of SPF also has an impact on the PF key values. For example, in the previous version of SPF, the F12 or F24 key would return your cursor to the command line or, if set to retrieve, would replay your last command entered. Note that, in the above panel display, F12 is set to "Cancel" your SPF session.
You should review the PF key settings established by the software and reset them to meet your needs. Please also note that since the PF key settings are not necessarily consistent from panel to panel, we recommend a review of the keys for panels you use with some frequency. Users who have customized PF Keys to their own personal features will also have to reset them from the defaults established for OS/390. The command "keys" should be entered at each panel to verify your default settings.
Test the New SPF Now
The CIT staff recognizes the impact that these changes will have on the user community, especially on those systems that use scripted logon procedures to access the system. We are attempting to notify users of these changes as quickly as we become aware of them to allow users time to adjust to them. Users wishing to access the OS/390 system to test the new SPF can do so by signing onto NORTHY2K or TSOITST from the SAMON menu.
The CIT staff is prepared to offer users assistance and guidance in making their systems ready by the March 29 deadline. For help, please call TASC.
